Would you like to become a member of our Guild?
Criteria for becoming a new member:
Applicant must be experienced enough potter to be comfortable using the studio on their own, and knowledgeable enough to not damage any of the equipment. This applies to a member who regularly uses the studio or not.
If the applicant is a student, their teacher must ensure their interest in becoming a member goes beyond the access to extra studio time. The teacher must support their application to be a member. It is recommended that the student to have taken a minimum of 60 hr. of class time before applying for membership.
Outside applicant
The applicant must send a request for membership to the President. At least one member must support their application.
Their application must be accompanied by a portfolio of at least 3 photos or their work, a written account of their experience, and if possible a piece of their work. This may not be required if the applicant is well known to the Guild.
Consideration will be given to an applicant that has shown an interest in the Guild and has supported at least one workshop or participated in a public demonstration given by the Guild in each of the 2 years preceding their application.
If the applicant belongs to another Guild or pottery group, they are permitted to join our Guild, knowing that they are not absolved from any responsibilities of their membership in the Baie d’Urfe Guild.
Review process and acceptance
A minimum of three members, two of which must be on the executive, must accept the applicant.
The applicant must be advised by the President of the responsibilities of becoming a member, and the penalty of not performing these responsibilities being the cancelation of their membership. Once accepted as a member the applicant must sign a contract with the Guild accepting their responsibilities.
Use of the studio
New members are given a key to the building and the studio, and are instructed as how to use the alarm system. Entering and exiting the studio must be recorded in the Guild’s log book.
A new member must work with an existing member to acquire familiarity with the studio and its equipment if they have not taken classes at the studio.
Use of kilns: New members must attend a kiln workshop, then assist loading and firing the kilns with another more experienced member a number of times before being allowed to fire on their own.
If the new member wishes to use the slab roller or extruder they must also work with an experienced member before using these on their own.
